Question #2

Did the hard biscuits and chinks in the walls bring any memories of homemaking disasters you've had?

  1. About every batch of cookies I tried to make when we were first married. I quickly learned to enjoy rice krispie treats. They were harder to ruin. :)

I also remember one time Kara forgot to put salt or sugar in a batch of cookies and making mom try the first finished cookie. That face was priceless.

  2. I am sure I have messed up my share of things over the years. There are probably too many to count. I am sure I have put them away in my memory as "things to forget as soon as possible."
I do remember the first time I used the broiler...things can start on fire in the oven.
I do have to say I have never taken the time to wash my walls!!! Although it sounds really fun :)!!

  3. I remember some awful meals and recipes over the years. I do remember making some pretty soggy mashed potatoes and some steak that was so tough you could hardly chew it. I have made many batches of hard biscuits and hard cookies. I guess one thing I have learned over the years is that it's OK to throw that stuff out and start over again. Actually just a couple of weeks ago I tried a new recipe and the crust was mushy and yucky and terrible. I ended up throwing that out too - will I ever really learn?

I was just thinking how nice it is that now I am getting most of my new ideas and new recipes that I love from my girls. I'm so glad you have all turned into really good cooks - in spite of me...

As far as the cleaning disasters go, I remember using bleach and ruining some clothes in the washer (although I am glad I at least have a washer.) I've also ruined some clothes by using an iron that was too hot and melting the material. Cleaning for cleaning's sake has never been my big love, and I don't think I would be as ambitious about cleaning as Marty was. I did think it was pretty funny how her wall started falling apart. Oops! Oh well...

  4. This question just makes me think of "green glory" Bethany made as her first meal for Terry. She'll have to tell the rest.

What I relate to most with her cleaning/cooking problems was that I often try to spend time making things nice or at least better and it's frustrating that sometimes my efforts don't give me the results I'm hoping for.

    I'm liking this book.

  5. Once at school I tried to make a pot out of clay. But, instead, it turned out flat with teeny sides.
I am probably a little bit too young to have had many homemaking disasters.

  6. Abby and Emily,
I am so glad you are reading this book too. It's fun to know what you think about it. Abby, thanks for posting your comment. It's funny how all of us goof things up sometimes - and it's really OK when we do. I'd love to hear from Emily too. Love you all sooooo much!!!
